Types of skin masks and their benefits

Cocooning never goes out of style—and nothing is easier than indulging in a face mask. There are many types and textures of face masks on the market. They all have a multitude of ingredients that can be beneficial for your skin’s needs. However, like all good things, it is important to choose the right face mask for your skin and not overuse it. Here is our guide to the world of skin masks.

Two major groups of face masks

There are two main groups of face masks: moisturizing/soothing masks and exfoliating masks. Although they are optional to your skin care routine, they both can be used frequently. Nevertheless, you have to plan when deciding to apply one or the other with your other skin products.

Other face masks that work their magic

In addition to the two groups of face masks, there are instant masks and patches, which are very popular and (almost) magical products that work quickly to give your skin a lifting, plumping, and luminous effect. Although they give noticeable results, remember that they are only temporary. That is why having a good skin care routine every day is important.

Your skin type and needs

Dry/dehydrated skin

To restore suppleness and comfort to your skin, opt for a nourishing, moisturizing mask. Hyaluronic acid, glycerine, and squalane are suitable ingredients for this type of skin.

Combination and oily skin

While you can still use a moisturizing mask occasionally, we recommend you choose a formula that will regulate your sebum secretion and deep-clean your pores. Ingredients you should look for when you have combination and oily skin include salicylic acid, niacinamide and charcoal powder.

Dull/mature skin

Restore radiance and elasticity to your face with a mask rich in antioxidants and vitamins. These ingredients will fight the signs of aging and external aggressors, such as pollution, temperature changes and stress.

Sensitive skin

Choose a hypoallergenic mask designed for reactive skin. Avoid dyes, fragrances, and grainy textures, as they can irritate your skin.

Say yes to face masks. But how often should you do them?

When it comes to face masks, is it possible to overdo it? The answer is yes! You need to take into account the other products in your skin care routine. For example, exfoliating masks will unclog your pores and refine your skin texture, much like a thorough cleansing. If you combine this mask after another exfoliation product, it could be too much and irritate your skin. As for a moisturizing/soothing mask, avoid using it when your routine already has a lot of moisturizing products/or rich ingredients. Yes, it's possible to “suffocate” your skin with too much moisturizer. The skin will assimilate only what it needs and then discard the rest, which means a waste of product and money. The ideal time for your beautiful skin to benefit from the vitamins and ingredients of a moisturizing mask is in the evening when it's rested and ready to regenerate.

Face masks aren't absolutely necessary; but they can definitely help and give your skin a helping hand. If you feel like it, go for it! Pamper yourself and enjoy the benefits a face mask can give you. Don't forget to consider your needs and, above all, your current skin care routine.
