How can I make my purchasing habits more sustainable?
It's never too late to adopt eco-friendly purchasing habits. Every little thing you do can make a difference.
If you don't know where to start, our Eco Committee has some ideas and actions to help you reduce your environmental impact when you visit Familiprix branches.
Tip 1: Bring your own reusable bag
Always leave a reusable bag in your car, backpack or purse. This way, you won't forget your reusable bag when you go shopping, even if it's a last-minute purchase.
Reducing the use of single-use plastic and reusing bags are good ways to start taking care of the environment.
In fact, for the past few years, Familiprix has removed single-use plastic bags from all of its stores to limit plastic waste production and offer customers an environmentally responsible alternative. In case you forget, you can also find cloth bags available at low cost in our stores.
Tip 2: Opt for the eco-friendly alternative in your product choices
Some products and brands go the extra mile to reduce their environmental footprint, whether it's in the manufacturing of the product, the packaging or even the transportation of the product. By supporting these brands, you are helping to make a difference.
Don't know any of them? We’ve got you covered! Did you know that Familiprix has a wide selection of eco-friendly products that are easily identifiable thanks to our eco-labelling program? These products meet a list of evaluation criteria, which ensures a minimal social and environmental impact.
Identify them with the “Eco-friendly choice” label and prioritize them for your next purchase. Whether it's a one-time trial or part of your routine, your action counts just as much.

Tip 3: Ask for an electronic invoice
Invoices always end up in your pocket, as a mess on the counter, or in the bottom of a bag—only to end up in the garbage or the recycling bin. Is it really necessary to print them?
You can obtain an electronic version of your invoice to avoid printing it. You will receive it directly by email. Why not save trees while avoiding picking up paper that is lying around?
It's very simple, ask the cashier at checkout and give them your email address. If you are a Familiplus member, your preference can also be saved with your profile at the time of the transaction or right now via your online account as long as you have indicated your email address.
Want to minimize your digital impact further? Delete or archive the email and its attachment once you've viewed it.
Tip 4: Walk or bike to the Familiprix store nearest you
Familiprix invites you to select the branch closest to your home when it comes to shopping or picking up a prescription. This way, you will avoid making an extra car trip and increase your carbon footprint.
In addition, don't hesitate to adopt an active transportation solution, such as walking or biking. You can also take public transit, like the bus, or carpool for your trip to the pharmacy. In addition to positively impacting the planet, it will be a good opportunity to activate your body, do a little sport and accumulate Familiplus points with the Healthy Living program available on the mobile application.
Tip 5: Recover or give a second life to packaging
Finally, when you get home with your purchases, you can always do more. Be sure to drop off the appropriate packaging and containers at the recycling bin once you've used them. Don't hesitate to install the application or use the web version of Ça va où? to help you identify what is destined for recycling.
On the other hand, you could give a second life to some of your pots or packaging by finding a new use for them. You can think of toilet paper rolls that can be used as pots for your seeds or candle jars that can become a vase, a small jewelry box or a brand-new candle holder. It’s so easy going green!
