The glycemic index is a tool that ranks foods based on their effect on blood sugar levels after consumption. Foods with a high glycemic index cause a rapid rise in blood sugar, while foods with a low glycemic index have a slower effect.

Reducing consumption of foods with a high glycemic index

First, it’s important to know that the glycemic index is divided into three categories:

  • Low (55 or lower)
  • Medium (56 to 69)
  • High (70 or higher)

Diabetes Canada recommends consistently choosing foods and beverages with a low glycemic index to better control blood sugar levels.

According to the organization, adopting a diet rich in low glycemic index foods offers several benefits, including:

  • A reduced risk of developing or worsening type 2 diabetes and its associated complications
  • A lower chance of developing cardiovascular diseases
  • Better weight management or weight loss
  • Experiencing the feeling that your full faster
  • Etc.

Clearly, choosing low glycemic foods is a valuable strategy, especially for people with diabetes.

The consequences of high blood sugar

In the short term, a temporary rise in blood sugar usually doesn’t lead to serious consequences. However, over time, it can lead to complications, such as cardiovascular events, kidney problems, retinopathy, or even blindness.

Chronic hyperglycemia, even at low levels, can result in more serious complications related to diabetes, including:

  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Blood vessel issues
  • Retinopathy or blindness
  • Kidney disease
  • Neurological disorders
  • And more

A temporary spike in blood sugar doesn’t have serious short-term effects, unless it’s extremely high (above 28-33 mmol/L) or occurs frequently.

Simple ways to lower blood sugar levels

Adopting healthy habits helps control blood sugar levels. A proper diet (low glycemic index foods), maintaining a healthy weight, and regular exercise are excellent ways to keep blood sugar in check.
